The wave generation process is as follows: The analog output function module of the PLC outputs a 0–10V control signal to regulate the output frequency of the FR-E540 frequency converter. The frequency converter controls the speed of the three-phase asynchronous motor in real-time. The motor drives the paddle of the wave maker to strike the water surface. Different motor speeds result in variations in wave length and peak between two wave heads. Thus, different speeds of the three-phase asynchronous motor correspond to different wave heads, wave lengths, and wave peaks. Therefore, different speed combinations of two three-phase asynchronous motors can simulate and reproduce various sea conditions in real-time. To enhance reliability, a manual backup speed regulation system is designed in this control system to ensure that wave generation is not affected by computer failures. Operators can adjust the frequency converter speed via a potentiometer to maintain normal wave generation. The system configuration consists of three local control units composed of three frequency converters and three-phase asynchronous motors, along with a server and human-machine interaction server architecture based on a PC.
