Scope:

Standard 4790 describes a method for determining the effect of a small ignition source, using a hot metal nut, on textile floor coverings. It applies to all types of textile floor coverings, whether loosely laid or fully adhered, with or without underlay.

Sample Requirements:

According to the standard, at least 3 specimens, sized 300mm ? 300mm, including any backing or underlay that forms part of the final installation, must be cut.

Test Procedure:

Test the specimen within 2 minutes of removal from the standard textile conditioning atmosphere or environment

Heat the nut to a temperature of 900±20°C in a muffle furnace

Place the heated nut on the surface of the specimen, ensuring it is centered within the clamping ring.

After the sliding panel has been in contact with the specimen for 30±2 seconds. Remove the nut, keeping it closed until all ignition effects have ceased.
