Epoxy resin refers to a general term for polymer compounds containing two or more epoxy groups in their molecular chain structure. It belongs to thermosetting resins, with bisphenol A-type epoxy resin being the representative.

Most epoxy adhesives are thermosetting and have the following main characteristics: the higher the temperature, the faster the curing; the larger the amount mixed at once, the faster the curing; and exothermic reactions occur during the curing process.

1. Epoxy resin alone has very low application value and must be used with a curing agent to have practical value.

2. High bonding strength: Among synthetic adhesives, epoxy resin adhesive ranks among the highest in bonding strength.

3. Low curing shrinkage rate: Epoxy resin adhesive has the smallest shrinkage rate among adhesives, which is one of the reasons for its high bonding strength after curing.

For example: Phenolic resin adhesive: 8–10%; Silicone resin adhesive: 6–8%

Polyester resin adhesive: 4–8%; Epoxy resin adhesive: 1–3%

After modification, the shrinkage rate of epoxy resin adhesive can be reduced to 0.1–0.3%, with a thermal expansion coefficient of 6.0×10??/°C.

4. Good chemical resistance: Ether groups, benzene rings, and aliphatic hydroxyl groups in the cured system are not easily eroded by acids or alkalis. It can be used for two years in seawater, petroleum, kerosene, 10% H?SO?, 10% HCl, 10% HAc, 10% NH?, 10% H?PO?, and 30% Na?CO?; half a year in 50% H?SO? and 10% HNO? at room temperature; and one month in 10% NaOH (100°C) without any change in performance.

5. Excellent electrical insulation: The breakdown voltage of epoxy resin can exceed 35 kV/mm. It also has good process performance, stable product dimensions, good durability, and low water absorption. Although bisphenol A-type epoxy resin has many advantages, it also has some disadvantages: ① High operational viscosity, which can be inconvenient during application; ② Brittleness of the cured product with low elongation; ③ Low peel strength; ④ Poor resistance to mechanical and thermal shock.

Applications of Epoxy Resin:

① Coating industry: Epoxy resin is most widely used in the coating industry, with water-based coatings, powder coatings, and high-solid coatings being commonly used. It is widely applied in pipelines, containers, automobiles, ships, aerospace, electronics, toys, crafts, and other industries.

② Electronics and electrical industry: Epoxy resin adhesive can be used for electrical insulation materials, such as sealing and potting of rectifiers and transformers; sealing protection of electronic components; insulation treatment and bonding of electromechanical products; sealing and bonding of batteries; and surface coating of capacitors, resistors, and inductors.

③ Hardware accessories, crafts, and sports goods industry: It can be used for products such as labels, accessories, trademarks, hardware, rackets, fishing gear, sports equipment, and crafts.

④ Optoelectronics industry: It can be used for encapsulation, potting, and bonding of products like light-emitting diodes (LEDs), digital tubes, pixel tubes, electronic displays, and LED lighting.

⑤ Construction industry: It is widely used in roads, bridges, flooring, steel structures, buildings, wall coatings, dams, engineering construction, and cultural relic restoration.

⑥ Adhesive, sealant, and composite material fields: Such as bonding between wind turbine blades, crafts, ceramics, glass, and other materials; composite carbon fiber boards; sealing of microelectronic materials, etc.
