BELIMO Electric Control Ball Valve R2 Two-Way Control Ball Valve, R3 Three-Way Control Ball Valve Control Characteristics For control stability, the valve requires a flow characteristic opposite to the nonlinear characteristics of coils and other heat transfer devices. The equal percentage characteristic makes the heat output linear relative to the valve opening. When the valve begins to open, the flow increases very slowly. Under experimental control conditions, a full-port ball valve exhibits an equal percentage characteristic. Unfortunately, when a typical ball valve is installed on-site, its characteristics become severely distorted. The reason is that a full-port ball valve has a very high Cv value relative to its size. In such applications, the valve is often oversized, resulting in poor "valve authority." As a consequence, when the valve is fully open, the pressure difference across it is very small. As the valve closes, the pressure difference increases. Only when the valve is fully closed does the full system pressure act on it. Such significant pressure variations distort the valve’s characteristics, causing it to lose its equal percentage behavior. When the valve begins to open, the flow increases very rapidly, making stable control difficult to achieve. When using reduced pipe diameters, the effective Cv value decreases due to geometric factors of the pipeline. This also leads to distortion of the valve’s characteristics. BELIMO’s patented technology for control ball valves: a special flow conditioning device—the flow disc. BELIMO has solved the control stability issue of ball valves. The flow disc is a spherical surface with a concave side that fits well with the surface of the spherical valve core. The flow is precisely controlled through the opening between the V-shaped notch of the flow disc and the spherical valve core. This reduces the Cv value of the ball valve to that of a same-sized globe valve. The flow disc determines the valve’s characteristics. Different flow discs with varying notch shapes are available, allowing each valve size to have different Cv values. One advantage of the BELIMO characteristic control ball valve is that it no longer requires pipe reduction. However, the main benefit is that the valve exhibits a true equal percentage characteristic, especially during the initial opening phase. The flow increases very slowly, improving control stability and energy efficiency.
