Welding Methods for PP Sheets

PP sheets are a type of board we commonly use. They have low density, are easy to weld and process, and offer excellent chemical resistance, heat resistance, impact resistance, and are non-toxic and odorless, making them one of the engineering plastics that meet environmental protection requirements. So, do you know how PP sheets are welded?

1.Hot Plate Welding
Hot plate welding for PP sheets is a process that uses electrically heated metal molds to soften the surfaces of the plastic parts to be joined. It is almost applicable to all thermoplastic parts, whether large or small. It is particularly suitable for welding softer semi-crystalline thermoplastics, such as PE sheets or PP sheets. Since different mold surface temperatures can be adapted to two different thermoplastic materials, this process is suitable for welding different materials. Hot plate welding can achieve high welding strength. However, the cycle time for this process may be relatively long, with small parts taking about 15 seconds and very large parts requiring minutes.
2. Hot Gas Welding
Hot gas welding for PP sheets is a widely used method for connecting thermoplastic profiles and sheets to produce large parts. It is used for the local assembly of smaller injection-molded parts, the repair of thermoplastic parts, and the manufacturing of prototype parts.
3. Extrusion Welding
Extrusion welding is a welding method developed from hot gas welding. It is mainly used for the automatic welding of larger sheet structures.
4. Adhesive Bonding
Adhesives can be used to join plastic parts made of the same polymer material.
5. Solvent Bonding
Solvent bonding is a method that can be used to assemble certain thermoplastic parts, often applied to amorphous thermoplastic parts. It is a simple and relatively inexpensive method for forming strong, sealed assemblies of amorphous thermoplastic parts. The low viscosity of the solvent requires that the parts to be bonded should be non-flexible and molded with relatively tight tolerances.
We generally consider the welding methods for PP sheets to be irreversible thermoplastic welding. A few processes, such as induction welding, can produce reversible assemblies. The choice of method should be determined early in the part design stage, as the welding method is crucial to the design requirements of the part, and different welding methods also have relatively distinct differences.
