Widely used in biotribology research such as artificial joint replacement materials.

Artificial materials can be divided into (1) alloys, composites, and ceramics used as structural materials, and (2) synthetic hyaluronic acid and polymer gels used as boundary lubrication and fluid film lubrication materials. Structural materials include UHMWPE, Al2O3, polycarbonate polyurethane (PCU), Ti6Al4V, etc., which are used to replace acetabular cup components, femoral heads, menisci, and tibias, respectively. Additionally, lubricant materials for knee and hip joints, such as hydrogels based on phospholipids and animal-extracted hyaluronic acid, can be directly injected to lubricate friction areas. The friction and wear trends of artificial materials are very similar to those of healthy human joints, and in some cases, even superior to natural human joints. The friction and wear tests of the biotribology testing machine comply with ASTM F732 and ISO 14242 standard test methods. This includes motion patterns, loading methods, and velocity profiles related to femoral head kinematics. In addition to standard functions, the D testing machine offers more extended capabilities, providing greater potential design space for material property testing methods and future test standards that may emerge.
