Oil silk is the waste material from the silk reeling process in silk spinning mills—known as "falling silk."

Oil silk is widely used in sock weaving. Socks made from oil silk not only possess the moisture-absorbing properties of silk socks, offering comfort, softness, and odor resistance, but also feature the appearance effect of loop yarn socks, with strong fuzziness and a coarse, rugged look. They are particularly suitable for warmth and frost protection in winter. Moreover, oil silk socks are low-priced and highly popular among the working class. Oil silk yarn retains a significant amount of natural impurities on its surface, giving it an extremely rough appearance and relatively low strength. If such yarn is woven on a sock machine without undergoing a dyeing process first, it often clogs and breaks, making continuous production impossible.
