Properties: White crystals or crystalline powder, a non-polar amino acid with a slightly bitter taste. Soluble in water (solubility 23.7g/L at 20°C and 24.26g/L at 25°C), acetic acid (10.9g/L), dilute hydrochloric acid, alkaline solutions, and carbonate solutions; slightly soluble in alcohol (0.72g/L); insoluble in ether. Sublimes at 145–148°C, decomposes at 293–295°C, specific gravity 1.29 (18°C).

Uses: This product is an amino acid-based drug. Used in amino acid infusions and comprehensive amino acid preparations. Applied in the diagnosis and treatment of infantile idiopathic hyperglycemia, as well as disorders of glucose metabolism, liver diseases accompanied by reduced bile secretion, anemia, poisoning, muscular atrophy, sequelae of poliomyelitis, neuritis, and psychiatric conditions. It is an essential amino acid for humans, with an adult male requirement of 2.2g/day, necessary for normal infant growth and maintenance of nitrogen balance in adults. Primarily used as a nutritional supplement, it has hypoglycemic and growth-promoting effects. Approved for use as a flavoring agent according to China's GB2760-96.
