Water hardness is mainly caused by cations: calcium (Ca2+) and magnesium (Mg2+) ions. When raw water containing hardness ions passes through the ion exchange resin layer, the calcium and magnesium ions in the water exchange with the sodium ions in the resin. The resin adsorbs the calcium and magnesium ions, while sodium ions enter the water, resulting in softened water that has had the hardness ions removed. As the exchange process continues, once all the Na+ in the resin is replaced, it loses its exchange function. At this point, an NaCl solution must be used to regenerate the resin, replacing the adsorbed Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions. The resin re-adsorbs sodium ions and regains its softening exchange capacity.
