1. Introduction to Adhesives

Adhesive: A general term for natural or synthetic, organic or inorganic substances that can join two or more components or materials together through interfacial adhesion and cohesion. Commonly referred to as glue. In short, an adhesive is a substance that bonds materials together through adhesion. "Adhesive" is the standard general term, which also includes other types such as glues, mastics, pastes, and ointments.

Adhesives, also known as binders, are what we commonly call glue. Adhesives contain a large number of harmful substances, such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), benzene, toluene, xylene, formaldehyde, free toluene diisocyanate, and other volatile organic compounds, which may cause environmental pollution and harm human health.

2. Classification of Adhesives

Based on the different dispersion media and their content in adhesive products, adhesives are classified into three categories: solvent-based adhesives, water-based adhesives, and bulk adhesives. Typically, water-based adhesives are low-VOC adhesives.

Solvent-based adhesives: Adhesives with volatile organic solvents as the main dispersion medium.

Water-based adhesives: Adhesives with water as the main dispersion medium.

Bulk adhesives: Adhesives with a dispersion medium content of 5% or less of the total mass.

VOC content, benzene series (benzene, toluene, and xylene), halogenated hydrocarbons (dichloromethane, 1,2-dichloroethane, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, 1,1,2-trichloroethane), toluene diisocyanate, free formaldehyde, etc.
