1. Workplace Environmental Noise

Workplace environmental noise refers to the noise environment generated in production workshops and work areas. China's occupational noise exposure limit standard is an 8-hour equivalent continuous A-weighted sound level of 85 dB.

Long-term exposure to high noise environments without any effective protective measures will inevitably lead to permanent and irreversible hearing loss, and may even cause severe occupational deafness. Both domestic and international regulations now classify occupational deafness as a significant occupational disease. In addition to causing deafness, intense noise can also adversely affect the human nervous system, cardiovascular system, digestive system, and reproductive functions. Particularly intense noise can lead to mental disorders, shock, and even endanger life. Because noise easily causes psychological fear and masks alarm signals, it is often a critical contributing factor in work-related fatal accidents.

2. Sources of Workplace Noise

Most workplace noise impacts stem from production noise, also known as industrial noise, which is widespread across various types of enterprises and is one of the most common occupational hazard factors. Industrial noise generated in different industries has distinct characteristics: power plant noise mainly arises from fluid dynamic noise due to vibration, friction, and collision during the operation of various equipment; mining environmental noise is primarily generated by various machine operations, such as excavation, drilling, shoveling, and crushing; noise in the automotive manufacturing industry mainly comes from stamping, welding, fans, transport equipment, as well as daily grinding and polishing; textile mills have multiple noise sources, with weaving workshops having the highest noise intensity; the machining industry's main noise sources are mechanical noises from vibration, friction, and collision.

3. Characteristics of Industrial Noise

(1) High intensity: Industrial noise sound pressure levels are typically above 80 dB(A), and can even exceed 110 dB(A). Long-term exposure can damage both the auditory and non-auditory systems of the human ear;

(2) High proportion of high-frequency sounds: High-frequency sounds are common, and their harm is greater than that of mid- and low-frequency sounds;

(3) Long duration: During production processes, workers may be exposed to strong noise for several hours each workday;

(4) Combined effects with other harmful factors: Production processes often involve simultaneous exposure to vibrations, high temperatures, toxic substances, and other harmful factors that interact and pose risks to human health;

If workers are exposed to high-decibel noise for prolonged periods, it can cause irreversible damage to the auditory organs, with the first consequence being "noise-induced hearing loss."
