1.1 Introduction to NAVTEX
NAVTEX is the English abbreviation for "Navigational Telex," a specialized maritime service that uses radio telex direct-printing telegraphy for transmission and reception. Through this service, vessels can automatically receive maritime safety information such as search and rescue messages, navigational warnings, meteorological warnings, and other urgent information from coast radio stations. It provides a convenient and automated means for ships to obtain maritime safety information.
NAVTEX is part of the GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System). NAVTEX messages are broadcast uniformly on the internationally standardized frequency of 518 kHz and on nationally designated domestic frequencies. NAVTEX receivers are mandatory equipment for vessels under international conventions. The international NAVTEX service refers to the broadcast and automatic reception of English-language maritime safety information on the 518 kHz frequency through international coordination.
Domestic NAVTEX service refers to the broadcast and automatic reception of maritime safety information in the national language on frequencies designated by each country (one medium frequency and 4209.5 kHz).
