Polycarbonate (abbreviated as PC), also known as PC plastic, is a high molecular polymer containing carbonate groups in its molecular chain. Based on the structure of the ester group, it can be classified into aliphatic, aromatic, aliphatic-aromatic, and other types. Among these, the mechanical properties of aliphatic and aliphatic-aromatic polycarbonates are relatively low, which limits their application in engineering plastics.

Polycarbonate is a tough thermoplastic resin, and its name is derived from the groups within its structure. It can be synthesized from bisphenol A and phosgene (COCl2). The more commonly used method today is the melt transesterification process (synthesized through transesterification and polycondensation of bisphenol A and diphenyl carbonate).

PC laminated sheets are widely used in protective windows for banks, embassies, detention centers, and public places, as well as in aircraft canopies, lighting equipment, industrial safety barriers, and bulletproof glass.

PC sheets can be used for various signs, such as gasoline pump dials, automotive dashboards, warehouse and outdoor commercial signs, and point-type sliding indicators. PC resin is used in automotive lighting systems, dashboard systems, and interior decoration systems, serving as headlight covers, reinforced automotive front and rear bumpers, mirror frames, door frame covers, lever protective sleeves, and spoilers. PC is applied in junction boxes, sockets, plugs and sleeves, gaskets, television conversion devices, connectors for communication cables under telephone line brackets, switch boxes, telephone exchanges, and distribution panel components. It is also used for relay housings. PC can be used for low-load parts in household appliance motors, vacuum cleaners, hair washers, coffee makers, toasters, and handles for power tools. It is suitable for various gears, worm gears, bushings, guide rails, and refrigerator shelves. PC is an ideal material for optical disc storage media.

PC bottles (containers) are transparent, lightweight, impact-resistant, and can withstand certain high temperatures and corrosive solution washing, making them suitable as recyclable bottles (containers). PC and PC alloys can be used for computer frames, casings, and peripherals, as well as printer parts. Modified PC is resistant to high-energy radiation sterilization, steam, and baking disinfection, making it suitable for blood collection specimen devices, blood oxygenators, surgical instruments, kidney dialyzers, etc. PC can be used for helmets and safety caps, protective face shields, sunglasses, and sports goggles. PC films are widely used in printed charts, pharmaceutical packaging, and membrane commutators.

The application development of polycarbonate is moving towards high composite, high functionality, specialization, and serialization.
