I. Introduction to Early Suppression Fast Response (ESFR) Sprinkler K242 (Upright)
The ESFR Early Suppression Fast Response sprinkler, known for its rapid response time and large flow coefficient, is currently the only fire-suppression type sprinkler capable of early fire suppression among all sprinklers. Previously, several domestic manufacturers produced pendant-type ESFR sprinklers. However, the upright ESFR sprinkler (ESFR 202/68°C U) offers more convenient piping arrangements compared to the pendant-type ESFR sprinkler (ESFR 202/68°C P), better meeting the distance requirements from the roof deck, making it more favored by designers, installers, and users.
This ESFR sprinkler, along with the EC sprinkler, was submitted to the Tianjin Testing Center for inspection. [It is particularly noteworthy that, unlike pendant sprinklers of the same specification, this sprinkler must undergo five rigorous full-scale fire suppression tests according to the GB5135.9-2006 standard. The test materials consist of flammable standard plastic products (polypropylene plastic cups) and Type II test commodities (double-layer triple-corrugated cardboard boxes), arranged in racks of varying heights (5.9–9.0 m) for fire suppression testing.] The test results indicate that the sprinkler's fire suppression performance is qualified, capable of suppressing warehouse fires, and it meets the requirements of the aforementioned standard.
II. Application of Early Suppression Fast Response (ESFR) Sprinkler K242 (Upright)
The upright ESFR fast response early suppression glass bulb sprinkler is a large-diameter sprinkler and a key component of automatic fire sprinkler systems. It serves both to detect fires and to extinguish them through automatic water discharge. Featuring a 2.5 mm glass bulb, a large nozzle diameter, and an expansive deflector, its Response Time Index (RTI) is ≤28±8 (m·s). This design ensures rapid fire response, high flow rates, large water droplet diameters, and superior fire suppression efficiency. It is specifically designed for high-pile and high-rack storage warehouses, offering distinct advantages over conventional sprinklers. It is suitable for protecting warehouses storing ordinary hazards, Class I–IV commodities, plastic products, and mixed materials.

III. Precautions for Early Suppression Fast Response (ESFR) Sprinkler K242 (Upright)

1. Sprinklers should be stored in a dry environment between -15°C and 40°C and must not be used in temperatures below 4°C.

2. During installation, it is recommended to use polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) seal tape on threaded connections with pipe fittings. Pipe fittings should comply with national standards.

3. Installation must be performed using the appropriate wrench socket provided by the manufacturer, as illustrated below. The tightening torque for the sprinkler should be 10–20 N·m and must not exceed 25 N·m. After installation, ensure sprinklers are neatly arranged to prevent damage from impact.

4. Sprinklers must be kept clean; painting or coating them with paint or other materials is strictly prohibited.

5. Sprinklers awaiting installation should be stored in the foam protective boxes provided by the manufacturer. Construction personnel must not use other containers, such as safety helmets or paint buckets, for storage or handling.

6. Handling sprinklers must be done gently; throwing, grabbing, or pouring them is not allowed. The fusible alloy element must not be subjected to impact.
