Lightning Protection, Grounding, and Overvoltage Protection Design

      Grid-connected photovoltaic power generation systems are susceptible to overvoltage caused by lightning due to the wide area of the solar photovoltaic array and their installation in exposed outdoor locations. Therefore, appropriate lightning protection measures should be taken based on the installation location and importance of the solar photovoltaic power generation system.

The lightning protection system consists of protection against direct lightning strikes and protection against induced lightning.

(1) Direct Lightning Strike Protection Design: The metal fasteners of the solar panels in this system are reliably connected to the ground angle steel.

(2) Induced Lightning Protection Design: To prevent damage to system equipment from induced lightning, lightning protection devices are installed at the following points in this design.

The inverter itself has lightning protection, meeting the national secondary lightning protection standard;

AC Distribution Cabinet: To protect the inverter from induced lightning introduced by the grid, a surge protective device (SPD) is installed in the AC distribution cabinet. The AC SPD is connected in series with an AC circuit breaker and then to the AC output line, while the grounding terminal of the SPD is connected to the PE wire.

Grounding

(1) The grounding resistance of the solar grounding system is less than 4 ohms;

(2) All metal parts, including brackets and metal enclosures of electrical equipment, in this design must be reliably grounded;

(3) The AC part of this design is equipped with a dedicated protective grounding wire (consistent with the building's grounding system).
