| Physical and Chemical Properties | Iron Dextran Injection is a dark brown colloidal solution. Iron Dextran solid is a dark brown amorphous powder. Odorless, astringent taste. Hygroscopic in air. Easily soluble in water, forming a dark brown colloidal solution with a pH of 5.2-6.5, insoluble in organic solvents such as ethanol. Iron Dextran Injection is a complex of iron and dextran. After intramuscular injection, part of the iron is phagocytosed by macrophages and transferred to fibroblasts, while the remaining iron is slowly removed from the injection site (50% removed in 72 hours) and enters the plasma via the lymphatic system. It can still be detected in the blood 3 weeks after injection. The iron is mainly stored in the reticuloendothelial cells of the liver and spleen and slowly released for hemoglobin synthesis. This absorption pathway is not controlled by the gastrointestinal tract, so the restoration of stored iron is faster and more complete. However, the rate of hemoglobin increase remains the same as with oral preparations, averaging about 0.15g per day. It is effective for iron deficiency anemia. |
| Uses | Medium molecular weight dextran is mainly used to increase plasma volume and maintain blood pressure, primarily for anti-shock purposes. It is suitable for replenishing blood volume and maintaining blood pressure in cases of massive blood loss, such as in burns, trauma, injuries, and other hemorrhagic conditions and shock caused by excessive blood loss. Low molecular weight dextran is mainly used to improve microcirculation, for preventing or eliminating red blood cell aggregation and thrombosis in blood vessels. Small molecular weight dextran has similar functions and uses to low molecular weight dextran. |
