Ash, inorganic matter, can be the residue after calcination or the remainder after drying. However, ash must be the solid part of a substance, not the gaseous or liquid part. At high temperatures, a series of physical and chemical changes occur. Eventually, the organic components volatilize and dissipate, while the inorganic components (mainly inorganic salts and oxides) remain. These residues are called ash.

After carbonization of organic drugs or thermal decomposition of inorganic drugs, moisten with sulfuric acid, ignite first at low temperature and then at high temperature (700~800°C) to complete ashing. Organic matter decomposes and volatilizes, and the residual non-volatile inorganic impurities (mostly metal oxides or inorganic salts) become sulfates, which are referred to as residue on ignition.
