Brass is a copper alloy with zinc as the main additive element, known for its attractive yellow color, and is collectively referred to as brass. Binary copper-zinc alloys are called common brass or simple brass. Brass with three or more elements is termed special brass or complex brass. Brass alloys with zinc content below 36% consist of a solid solution and exhibit good cold-working properties. For example, brass with 30% zinc is often used to make brass or 70/30 brass. Brass alloys with zinc content between 36% and 42% consist of α and β solid solutions, with 40% zinc brass being commonly used. To improve the properties of common brass, other elements such as aluminum, nickel, manganese, tin, silicon, and lead are often added. Aluminum enhances the strength, hardness, and corrosion resistance of brass but reduces plasticity, making it suitable for marine condenser tubes and other corrosion-resistant parts. Tin improves the strength and seawater corrosion resistance of brass, hence it is called naval brass and is used in ship thermal equipment and propellers. Lead improves the machinability of brass; this free-cutting brass is commonly used for clock parts. Brass castings are often used to make valves and pipe fittings.
