The purge unit of the Trane three-stage centrifugal chiller is a complex system. Because the unit operates under negative pressure, its function is to promptly remove air and non-condensable gases from the system. According to its functions, it can be divided into the following subsystems: refrigeration subsystem, purge chamber, evacuation subsystem, carbon tank, and regeneration system. These subsystems and their components are illustrated in Figure 4 EarthWise? Purge Unit Layout Diagram. Specifically, the purge unit includes but is not limited to the following components:

Purge chamber liquid temperature sensor, using the temperature sensor employed by the chiller control system.

Purge chamber operating temperature sensor (only available for subsequently installed purge units).

DynaView operating panel and main processor (only available for subsequently installed purge units).

Drier filter.

Liquid level sensor.

Compressor suction temperature sensor.

Carbon tank temperature sensor.

Expansion valve.

Evacuation flow restrictor.

Evacuation solenoid valve.

Exhaust solenoid valve.

Exhaust pipe pressure relief device.

Regeneration solenoid valve.

Cable port for chiller condenser connection pipe.

Gas and liquid interfaces from the chiller.

The purge operation modes include: automatic, manual, and adaptive modes.

The control systems are UC800 and CH530.
