The test sample is combusted under high-temperature conditions in a purified air stream, where all forms of sulfur in the sample are burned and decomposed. The resulting sulfur compounds are carried by the air stream into the electrolytic cell, where they combine with water to form H?SO?. This disrupts the original dynamic equilibrium of the iodine-iodide pair in the electrolytic cell, prompting the instrument to immediately output current to electrolyze the potassium iodide solution, generating iodine to restore the original dynamic balance. The amount of current consumed to return to this equilibrium is directly related to the sulfur decomposed from the test sample during combustion, which is measured and calculated by the microprocessor.
