The resistance temperature coefficient of silicon molybdenum rods is larger than that of general electric heating elements. At room temperature, the resistance value is very small. As the temperature increases, the resistance of the silicon molybdenum rod heating element rapidly increases with rising temperature, allowing for higher voltage application. Therefore, the voltage for silicon molybdenum rod heating is generally supplied through a step-down transformer to protect the silicon molybdenum rod from damage.
