When silicon molybdenum rods are heated above 1200°C in an oxidizing atmosphere, the following reaction occurs: 2MoSi2 + 7O2 → 2MoO3↑ + 4SiO2MoO3 volatilizes, and SiO2 adheres to the surface of the element, forming a dense quartz glass film that protects the substrate from further oxidation. Therefore, silicon molybdenum rods have excellent oxidation resistance, with a rated operating temperature of up to 1700°C in an oxidizing atmosphere (below the melting point of quartz, 1713°C). If the SiO2 film is damaged due to mechanical or chemical factors, it will automatically regenerate during use.

Suitable for operation in air, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and inert gases (helium, neon, argon), it also performs well in reducing atmospheres (CO, decomposed ammonia, and hydrocarbons). Water vapor is harmless to it, while hydrogen can damage its protective film and form a hydrocarbon compound. However, it can still be used at temperatures below 1350°C. The lower the dew point of hydrogen (i.e., the lower the moisture content), the lower the allowable operating temperature of the silicon molybdenum rod. Sulfur, fluorine, chlorine, and alkalis are harmful to the element, and acids react with the element, so contact should be avoided.
