Usage: Biochemical research. Phospholipase D (PLD) catalyzes the hydrolysis of phosphatidylcholine (PC) to produce phosphatidic acid (PA) and choline. Its activity is regulated by hormones, cytokines, neurotransmitters, and growth factors. Therefore, it is considered to play a role in signal transduction in various cell types. The three important lipid messengers produced by PLD play significant roles in various critical cellular processes. These lipids also serve important functions in downstream triglyceride and phospholipid synthesis pathways. PLD is essential for exocytosis in neurons and endocrine cells. Additionally, it plays a key role in phagocytosis. Phospholipase D is active against sphingomyelin and lysophospholipids. Phospholipase D hydrolyzes the phosphoester bonds of phospholipids and sphingomyelin to yield the corresponding phosphatidic acid.
