Barium stearate is a white or slightly yellow amorphous powder with a melting point >225°C. It has a stimulating effect on the central nervous system, is soluble in hot ethanol, benzene, toluene, and other non-polar solvents, but insoluble in water and ethanol. When dissolved in organic solvents by heating and then cooled, it forms a gelatinous substance. It is hygroscopic in air and non-sulfide polluting. It decomposes into stearic acid and the corresponding barium salt when exposed to strong acids.

Chemical Properties

Applications

1. Used as a high-temperature lubricant for machinery, a high-temperature additive for rubber products, and a light and heat stabilizer for polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastics;

2. Used as a heat stabilizer for PVC products;

3. Used as a waterproofing agent, lubricant, and bearing filler;

4. Used as a high-temperature powder for rubber products. It can serve as both a stabilizer and lubricant for PVC. Among all alkaline earth metal stearates, this product offers the best long-term heat resistance. It is mainly used in soft transparent films, sheets, artificial leather, as well as rigid boards and pipes. It is also used as a high-temperature release agent and high-temperature lubricant for machinery.

5. This product can be used as a heat stabilizer for vinyl chloride copolymers. It has good long-term heat resistance and lubricity, with a stabilizing effect greater than that of calcium stearate but less than that of lead stearate. It exhibits good synergistic effects when used with cadmium soaps, zinc soaps, or epoxy compounds. The general dosage is 0.1% to 2%. When combined with a small amount of lead-based stabilizers, it can improve the electrical properties of the products.

This product is mainly used in transparent films, sheets, artificial leather, rigid boards, and pipes. In soft products, it is often combined with cadmium, cadmium-zinc, or cadmium-lead stabilizers. In sulfur-resistant artificial leather formulations, it is often used with zinc soaps. In pipes and cable materials, it is often combined with basic lead salts and lead soaps. In corrugated boards, it is often used with cadmium soaps, lead soaps, and basic lead salts. This product is non-sulfide polluting. Excessive usage may cause segregation and scaling. It is also used as a high-temperature release agent and high-temperature lubricant for machinery.
