About Stainless Steel
Stainless steel plays a vital role in the hygiene preparation or storage of almost everything we eat or drink. All modern cars also have stainless steel components in critical areas, such as exhaust systems, seat belt buckles, airbag gas cylinders, and catalytic converters. Increasingly, stainless steel is being found in new applications in decoration, signage, shop fittings, architecture, furniture, equipment, and technology.

Stainless steel is generally regarded as a family of chromium-containing alloys. All these alloys contain at least 11% chromium. The chromium oxide layer on the metal makes stainless steel corrosion-resistant. This layer is only one micron thick, but it is incredibly strong and, when damaged, regenerates itself as long as oxygen is present.

The main branches of the stainless steel family tree are martensitic, ferritic, austenitic, and duplex stainless steels. The most commonly used types of stainless steel are ferritic, austenitic, and duplex stainless steels.

Ferritic stainless steels are pure chromium types with chromium content of 12%, with the balance mainly iron. Austenitic stainless steels typically contain 18% chromium and 8% nickel, with the balance mainly iron, while some austenitic stainless steels contain 2% molybdenum to enhance resistance to pitting corrosion. Duplex stainless steels have a microstructure, when normally heat-treated, with almost equal proportions of austenite and ferrite. This microstructure ensures that the tools are more resistant to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) than austenitic stainless steels.
