IATF16949, fully known as the Automotive Quality Management System Certification, is an international technical specification for the automotive industry. This specification is based on ISO9001 and incorporates specific technical requirements of the automotive sector, fully aligning with the ISO9001:2015 standard. Its primary focus is on defect prevention, aiming to reduce quality variations and waste that may occur in the automotive supply chain.

The IATF16949:2016 standard was released on October 1, 2016, marking a significant milestone in the development of management system standards for the automotive industry. Typically, this standard is revised every 6 to 8 years.

Please note: The TS16949:2009 standard was an automotive management system standard based on ISO9001:2008. With the release of the ISO9001:2015 version, ISO/TS16949 was officially renamed IATF16949.

Certification Process

1. Consulting and Guidance

To reduce risks and improve the success rate, it is advisable for enterprises to engage a consulting firm for guidance. Consulting firms can provide professional advice to help enterprises establish a quality management system more efficiently.

2. System Establishment and Internal Audit

With the assistance of the consulting firm, the enterprise establishes an information security management system and conducts internal audits and management reviews. Internal audits and management reviews are critical steps to ensure the effective operation of the system. Internal audits help identify issues in the system's operation for timely correction, while management reviews comprehensively evaluate the system's suitability, adequacy, and effectiveness.

3. Selection of Certification Body and Application

The enterprise can either seek recommendations from the consulting firm or independently select a suitable certification body, submitting documents such as the certification application, manual, and procedural files. When choosing a certification body, factors such as the body's qualifications, reputation, and service quality should be considered.

4. On-site Audit and Corrective Actions

After the certification body accepts the application, it will arrange for auditors to conduct an on-site audit. Following the audit, the enterprise must address any non-conformities identified. Once corrective actions are completed and confirmed by the certification body, the enterprise will be awarded the IATF16949 certificate.
