YOUNG Model 05108 Wind Monitor-HD

The Wind Monitor-HD incorporates important features that significantly extend the service life of this popular sensor. It is expected to enhance survivability in the harshest wind measurement applications.


The YOUNG Model 05108 Wind Monitor-HD measures horizontal wind speed and direction. This sensor shares many features with the Model 05106, including corrosion-resistant ceramic bearings and a 1/4-inch diameter propeller shaft. It employs a high-pitch propeller, which extends bearing life due to a lower rotation rate at comparable wind speeds. The direct output for wind speed is an AC sine wave, and for wind direction, it is a precision potentiometer. The sensor is mounted on a standard 1-inch IPS pipe. A mounting orientation ring is included.

A separate surge protection assembly (Model 19120) is available, serving both as a junction box for cable termination and as additional electrical transient surge protection. Separate signal conditioning devices can be used to convert the sensor signals to 0-5 V (Model 05608C) or 4-20 mA (Model 05638C). All three devices are housed in weatherproof enclosures and come with mounting hardware (Model 19120 is typically not used in conjunction with Models 05603C or 05631C).

The reliability of the Wind Monitor sensor is well-known. The sensitive vane and propeller combination has proven effective in countless applications across many disciplines. The Wind Monitor-HD (Heavy-Duty) model is designed to address the most common issue with mechanical wind sensors: bearing replacement. The HD uses oversized ceramic bearings with an ultra-long lifespan, lasting many times longer than standard stainless steel bearings. In addition to being more wear-resistant, ceramic bearings also resist corrosion in environments that are detrimental to steel bearings.

The Wind Monitor-HD also features an oversized propeller shaft, a high-pitch propeller, and a locking propeller nut, all of which further enhance the long-term reliability of the sensor.

For specific applications, separate signal conditioning is available. The Model 05608C Wind Sensor Interface provides calibrated wind speed and direction voltage outputs. The Model 05638C Wind Line Driver supplies a calibrated 4-20 mA current signal for each channel. Each circuit is housed in a weatherproof junction box with mounting hardware.
