A cartridge mechanical seal is an assembly that combines seven main components—rotating ring, stationary ring, spring, auxiliary sealing ring, shaft sleeve, gland static sealing gasket, etc.—into one integrated unit, also known as a cartridge seal (Cartridge Seal). Sometimes referred to as a cassette seal.
Because it is pre-assembled into a complete unit, the cartridge mechanical seal is easier, faster, and more reliable to install on equipment, representing the future direction of mechanical seal development.
Cartridge mechanical seals are generally balanced-type seals. Their structural feature is that all components are integrated, with the spring not in contact with the medium. They are balanced, internal-flow type, and include positioning blocks to adjust spring compression. To facilitate compensation when the rotating/stationary rings wear, a dynamic sealing ring is designed.

First, inspired by the concept of "containerization" in transportation, the cartridge seal was developed. The rotating and stationary parts of this seal are pre-assembled into a complete unit before installation. After inspection and pressure testing, it is mounted onto the shaft in the seal chamber, secured with set screws, and the gland bolts are tightened. Once the assembly positioning piece is removed, the mechanical seal operates on parallel surfaces and is ready for operation. This not only simplifies assembly but also ensures quality. Welded metal bellows mechanical seals are typically designed as cartridge seals for these advantages. A cassette seal is also a type of cartridge mechanical seal. In this design, the stationary ring, rotating ring, shaft sleeve, gland, and auxiliary seals are pre-assembled together with a shaft sleeve, facilitating quality inspection. After passing inspection, it only requires tightening the gland and set screws. Such pre-assembled, inspected, and tested seal units help maintain installation and assembly quality. This cartridge seal has the following characteristics:

(1)No need to measure the working length during installation;

(2)The shaft can be adjusted as required;

(3)No leakage issues during startup, as the seal has been pre-tested;

(4)Easy to maintain assembly quality by simply mounting and tightening the gland bolts during installation;

(5)Protects sealing surfaces from contamination or damage due to operational errors before installation or startup;

(6)Readjustable after thermal expansion of equipment;

(7)Self-centering through fit;

(8)Easy to remove the seal for cleaning and inspection without disassembling the pump equipment. API682 recommends the use of cartridge mechanical seals whenever possible.
