It is a two-component reaction-curing anti-corrosion coating composed of a paint material made from low-viscosity epoxy resin, pigments, fillers, additives, etc., through high-speed dispersion and grinding, and using low-viscosity modified amine as the curing agent.

Characteristics:

The biggest difference between solvent-free epoxy coatings and solvent-based epoxy coatings is that no volatile organic solvents are used as dispersing media during the manufacturing and application process. The coating formed by the cross-linking reaction and curing of low-viscosity amine curing agents and liquid epoxy resin possesses extraordinary properties.

Coating and Application:

Since the solvent-free coating used is an epoxy coating that does not contain solvents, with a solid content of over 98%, it has certain differences in application performance compared to solvent-based epoxy coatings. The most significant differences are the increased viscosity and shortened pot life.

1. When selecting solvent-free epoxy coatings, attention should be paid to the available construction conditions, including feasible application methods on-site (dual-feed hot spray, single-feed airless spray, roller coating, etc.) and the ambient temperature. Choose the appropriate type of solvent-free epoxy coating or request the manufacturer to adjust its application properties to meet on-site construction requirements. Generally, solvent-free epoxy coatings are not suitable for use below 10°C; below 20°C, it is recommended to use winter-grade solvent-free epoxy coatings; above 20°C, summer-grade solvent-free epoxy coatings should be selected, which helps achieve suitable pot life and drying time.

2. When preparing the coating, the application capacity within the pot life must be considered. Only mix as much as can be used within this period to avoid waste due to gelation from unused mixed coating.

3. If using a single-feed high-pressure airless spray method for application, it is advisable to choose an airless spray pump with a high pressure ratio, an appropriate nozzle hose length, and increase the total fluid output pressure to ensure smooth feeding and good atomization. Select a nozzle with the appropriate aperture and flow rate to ensure that the mixed coating can be used within the pot life. Additionally, during winter construction, due to lower temperatures, the viscosity of the paint increases significantly. While the conventional approach is to add thinners to reduce viscosity, doing so with solvent-free epoxy coatings defeats the purpose of being solvent-free. Therefore, during use, try to store the paint indoors or preheat it appropriately so that the paint temperature is not lower than 15°C, thereby reducing viscosity by increasing the paint temperature to meet spraying requirements. Also, appropriately increase the pressure of the paint pump and shorten the length of the spray hose as much as possible to ensure normal spraying.

Similarly, the increased viscosity of solvent-free epoxy coatings may make roller application more laborious for painters, potentially reducing efficiency. At low temperatures, the viscosity may be too high for roller application, and for flat surfaces, it is easy to exceed the designed thickness, while for vertical surfaces, sagging must be prevented. It is advisable to use a stiff brush or short-nap roller and apply with force, avoiding overly thick coats. A single coat thickness can typically be controlled within the range of 150-300 microns to prevent sagging.
